Overheard Quote

This is a fitting example of the kinds of conversation sometimes heard around campus... I heard this on my way out of a classroom about a week ago that I had just finished teaching in. Two male students had come in early and were chatting before their own class started:

"There's nothing funnier than being at 10x zoom when an enemy mech shows up 3 feet to your left."

I pondered it for a moment and then kept repeating it to myself til I got back to my office to write it down... Just so I could share it with you. :)

My last day in a classroom?

This morning (right now, in fact) could be the last time I sit in front of a classroom of students in a professorial position. I have a room full of students taking a Human factors exam. For all of them (because I asked this question of them) it's also their last exam of the quarter... After this... they are "Outta here!"...

I don't feel quite the same way (in part because I have a horrible weekend of grading ahead of me), but also, I'm very comfortable at RIT. I started here as a student in 1989 and the longest I've been "away" from campus was basically one quarter. I spent a summer at home, a summer in Florida, and then one quarter in town but with temp jobs before coming back to RIT for the new Information Technology program as my major.

So, RIT is a familiar friend. I've watched the campus change and grow over the last 17 years. I actually like the bricks. So different now from then. I think I'll find it fascinating to see what happens here in the future.

I am not going to be staying away from campus completely. For one thing I'll be here in July as an instructor for the Kids on Campus program. I'll probably also re-appear now and then at Campus Crusade for Christ activities (until they get to the point where I don't know anyone anymore). It's also possible that my future job will have me coming to campus for one reason or another.

So, anyway, it's not over yet, but it's close. I guess you could say the rumble-strips at this exit-ramp are sounding faster now. I'm looking forward to what happens after the stop-sign.
